The value of a digit is determined by its position in the number. We call this position the place value.
Let’s start with a three-digit number.
3 is in the hundreds place, so it’s worth 3 × 100, which is 300.
7 is in the tens place, so it’s worth 7 × 10, which is 70.
2 is in the ones place, so it is worth 2 × 1, which is 2.
300 + 70 + 2 = 372 = three hundred seventy-two
