If we look at the general population, a woman has a 1 out of 8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. In other words, in a group of 8 random women, on average 1 of them will develop the disease. However, there are lots of factors, such as race and family medical history, which raise or lower an individual woman's risk of developing breast cancer.
