Now let’s look at neutrons. Unlike protons that have a positive charge, and electrons that have a negative charge, neutrons are neither positive nor negative; they are neutral.
Neutrons and protons are what make up the nucleus of the atom. Without neutrons, the nucleus would fly apart because positively charged protons repel each other (ever tried to put the positive ends of two magnets together?). The neutrons act like glue to bind the protons together, so the number of neutrons affects how stable the atom is.
