Elements on the periodic table can be classified into different families in many ways. One way to classify elements is to divide them into metals, non-metals, and metalloids. The color key shows which elements belong to each family.
- Metal: shiny, malleable, good conductor of heat and electricity (Examples: copper, nickel, platinum)
- Non-metal: brittle as a solid, poor conductor of heat and electricity compared to metals (Examples: carbon, sulfur, chlorine)
- Metalloid: has mix of features from metals and non-metals (Examples: silicon, arsenic, antimony)
