Salt: Science Lesson

Wrap-up

It’s mind-boggling to think that we are all made of atoms, and that we are made up of the same elements that make up the air and earth, but truth is stranger than fiction. Look around you with your knowledge of atoms and elements, and you’ll discover some pretty surprising and interesting connections!

In this lesson you:
  • Identified chemical elements and compounds in everyday life
  • Looked at what makes up atoms, the building blocks of matter
  • Explored the periodic table of elements
On your own:
  • Spot elements and compounds in household items and look them up on the periodic table.
  • Scan the newspaper or other reading materials for mentions of elements and chemical compounds.
  • Practice using the names and symbols of elements by substituting them for everyday words. Start with H₂O for water, and CO₂ for carbon dioxide. At dinner, ask someone to please pass the sodium chloride (salt).
