Now we're ready to find a percent of any number.

We can calculate percentages by changing the percent to a decimal and multiplying it by the whole. This is good to know when we're shopping.

Let's say a $150 bookshelf is 10% off. What's the discount?

Our whole is $150 (100%). 10% is part of the whole. To find the discount, change the percent to a decimal and multiply it by the whole:

Discount:

10% = 0.10

0.10 × $150 = $15

So 10% of $150 is $15.

A $64 lamp is 25% off. What is the discount? (Pull out your calculator or use the one we provided for you above.)
