We have seen that some fractions can be simplified. For example, 1/2 is a simpler way to say 4/8.

To simplify fractions, look for a number that can be divided evenly into both the numerator and the denominator.

2 is a common factor that divides into both 12 and 16 evenly.

We can simplify even further:

Or you may have seen from the very beginning that 4 is the greatest common factor that divides into both 12 and 16 evenly.

The fraction 12/16 can be simplified (or reduced) to 3/4. We cannot simplify 3/4 any further because there is no whole number that can be divided evenly into both 3 and 4. So, 3/4 is a fraction in its simplest form.
