How do you measure how much water you drink? One easy way to measure it is by volume.

When you follow a recipe, you’ll notice that some ingredients are measured by volume, and some by weight.

  • Volume measures how much space something takes up. For example, a cup of sugar and a quart of milk are measured by volume. A container like a box or a pot also has volume, which tells you how much you can fit into the empty space.
  • Weight measures how heavy something is. For example, a pound of butter and an ounce of cheese are measured by weight. The tool we use to measure weight is a scale.

Here’s an example of a recipe where some ingredients are measured by volume and some are by weight.
