Anything can be measured by both volume and weight. Cookbooks sometimes use one or the other. For example, a stick of butter weighs 1/4 pound, and it has a volume of 8 tablespoons.

Another example: the measuring cup contains 1 cup of flour measured out by volume. If you pour that cup of flour on the scale, you'll find that it weighs about 4.5 ounces.
