Directions

To read a graduated cylinder, you need to know the value of each tick mark. For example, if there are 10 lines between the numbers 20 and 30, each line measures 1 milliliter. If there are 5 lines between the numbers 20 and 30, then each line measures 2 milliliters. For the example here, each line marks 1 milliliter. This is also indicated by the ratio 1/1 at the top.

The graduated cylinder contains 36 milliliters of water. Imagine an empty box that will hold exactly this amount of water. The box is 9cm long and 2cm wide. How high is the box?

Hint: We can rearrange the formula for volume to get the formula for height:
Volume = length × width × height
height = Volume / (length × width)

height = cm
